A Bondi was generally the middle class of much of Scandinavian society. Before the fall of the Icelandic Commonwealth the Norwegian crown, a Husbondi (house farmer) had more restricted rights, and were generally not permitted to own land. This however, could change if they supported their local 
<link="proto:Seer">Gothi</link>, or chieftan. Though for a while, land was own by tribes of many Gothi, they would slim in to one or two. By the end of the 12th century, there were less than some 14 cheiftans controlling the island.
This rough, non cemented system between priests, political speakers, and the middle class helped usher the fall of the Commonwealth, bringing about civil war to Iceland, allowing it to fall right into the hands of Norway.
